A Study of Occupational Health & Safety in the Garment Industry in Bangalore

The IT hub of Bangalore is also home over 950 garment factories which employ up to 400,000 workers in the bustling metropolis. While access to basic welfare benefits and securing the labour rights of garment workers are the foremost concerns, it would be equally important to understand the occupational hazards faced by workers on a daily basis and their long term health effects. During the course of this study, Cividep interviewed various stakeholders, including officials from the labour department, the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), doctors, management personnel from the garment industry, and workers themselves to understand these health and safety issues.
