Study on labour rights violations and the availability & effectiveness of grievance mechanisms in the construction sector in Bangalore
In 2011, the Bangalore Metro, i.e. ‘Namma Metro’, has been partly opened for public, after several years of construction. This massive infrastructure project employed thousands and still employs hundreds of workers who are vulnerable to inherent risks to their life and limbs while working. Building the Metro system is undoubtedly welcome in the traffic clogged city of Bangalore, but it has also come at the cost of adverse effects on the many construction workers employed in this project. Workers have to work under poor circumstances, such as job insecurity, lack of basic amenities, inadequacy of welfare facilities, pounding deadlines and low wages.
