Cividep-India studies working conditions as well as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues in the mobile phone manufacturing industry in India. The research into the mobile phone sector will feed into the activities done by different organisations and will serve to move the electronics sector to take corporate social responsibility issues more seriously.

Cividep-India Encourages Electronics Workers To:

Learn more about Labour Rights

Cividep-India encourages workers to contact responsible trade unions and NGOs to learn about legal rights on wages, social security, health and safety, and more. Many labour laws including the Minimum Wages Act, Factories Act, Bonus Act, Leave and Holidays Act, Apprenticeship Act, Industrial Disputes Act, and the Workmen’s Compensation Act are applicable to factories. Moreover, companies have a responsibility to inform workers of labour laws.

Learn more about Social Security

The ‘Provident Fund’ and ‘Employees State Insurance’ are two pillars of the social security scheme in India. Cividep-India encourages workers to get more information on their websites.

Learn more about Company Policies

Cividep-India encourages workers to ask their managers for a copy of the company policies on labour issues, and check the company’s website to compare the policies to the reality on the shop floor.

Participate in Work Councils

If the factory has workplace committees with whom the management consults, Cividep-India encourage workers to take an active part and raise whatever issues they feel are important.

Protect Workers Health

Cividep-India encourages workers to co-operate with factory officials in safety precautions such as wearing masks and gloves and to read safety manuals provided by the factory carefully. In cases where manuals are not provided, workers are encouraged to demand them.

Struggle for Labour Rights

The 8-hour work day and other benefits for workers were not given as charity. They were won through workers’ struggles over centuries. Cividep-India encourages workers to learn more about and take part in the Workers Movement.
