Last week, the European Parliament adopted a landmark position on Corporate Sustainability Due diligence (CSDDD) which is being negotiated during the ongoing trialogue with the European Commission and Council of the European Union.

Why It Works:
- Risk-based approach in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles (#UNGPs) and OECD – OCDE guidelines
- Comprehensive definition of access to remedy, stipulating strong stakeholder engagement & grievance mechanisms
- A single set of guidelines to provide clarity & certainty for businesses conducting #HREDD
Yet, STITCH has recommendations to make the final directive more effective:
- Extend the scope beyond companies with 250+ employees & 40M+ turnover to be impactful in fragmented industries such as the garment industry
- Include purchasing practices that are at the root of #humanrights infringements in core articles of the final directive
- Strengthen access to remedy so the burden of proof is fairly divided between companies and workers
STITCH urges the European Commission, Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to support the strong points in the parliamentary position and address the recommendations to make the final directive more impactful for people, the planet and business.
