In 2013, a film titled ‘Die dunkle seite der Schnäppchen Handys’ was produced by Viennese filmaker Christian Brueser. It traces the production facilities of Finnish smartphone company Nokia to its plant and supplier factories in Tamil Nadu India; and documents the working and living conditions of local factory workers employed in its production activities.
The film the ‘Dark Side of the Bargain Mobile Phones’ was shot during a visit in 2012 and deals with the living conditions of mobile phone manufacturing workers from the Nokia Tech Park SEZ (Special Economic Zone) in South India. The film examines the standard of life workers can afford from the wages they receive and shows the challenges that workers who produce our ‘affordable’ mobile phones face on a daily basis.
