An article series recently published on Scroll details the subpar labour and human rights standards in India’s labour-intensive and export-oriented garment sector. Diving deep into the issues of wage, gender discrimination, social protection, state regulation etc., this series comprehensively highlights how the garment sector has a long way to go to ensure decent working conditions, despite a 4.5% growth in exports since the past year.

It also mentions a study on wage standards co-contributed by Cividep India. Among other highlights, the article also found that many garment industry experts find an excuse for the below-minimum wage paid to female workers on the premise that ” wages paid to women are a supplementary wage for the family.”
