In a podcast with the Institute for Human Rights and Business, Deepika Rao,  Executive Director of Cividep talks about the living conditions of migrant women workers in Bangalore’s garment industry, who are forming an increasing proportion of its workforce in recent years.  These women hail from faraway states in north and eastern India, are alien to the city’s culture and language and have no social support system. Supplier factories most often take advantage of their vulnerabilities, often in the pretext of safety, restricting and monitoring their movement to and from the factories to their company-arranged hostels/ shared accommodation facilities. They are not informed of their legal entitlements and social security and have various living expenses deducted from their already low wages.
